Introduction
There are consulting soil scientists available to provide services throughout the United States. This section provides assistance in locating consulting soil scientists. Most of the soil scientists who do consulting services are members of one or more of the following organizations:
- National Society of Consulting Soil Scientists.
- Soil Science Society of America - Certified Professional Soil Scientists, Certified Professional Soil Classifiers.
- State Soil Associations/Societies, State Board of Regulations, and Association of Women Soil Scientists.
1. National Society of Consulting Soil Scientists (NSCSS)
The National Society of Consulting Soil Scientists (NSCSS) is a charter member of the USCSSA. Anyone who is a soil scientist may join NSCSS, however only consulting soil scientists qualify to hold elected office. Consulting members are pedologists, edaphologists, soil classifiers, soil surveyors, environmental site assessors, erosion and sediment control specialists, wetland delineators, on-site septic system site assessors, risk assessors, water quality protection specialists.

2 – Soil Science Society of America -- Certified Professional Soil Scientists / Certified Professional Soil Classifiers
To locate Soil Scientists certified by the Soil Science Society of America:
- Go to Soil Science Society of America web site
- Go to: "Find Others" and click on “Find a Certified Professional”
- Soil Scientists are identified in by the following two groups:
- Certified Professional Soil Scientists (CPSS)
- Certified Professional Soil Classifier (CPSC)
- Go to “Type of Search” and click on “Match All Criteria”
- Go to “Search by Profession" and under “Certification" enter CPSS. This will bring up an alphabetical list of all soil scientists and e-mail addresses of those that are Certified Professional Soil Scientists by SSSA. The same process is applicable for getting the names of those listed a Certified Professional Soil Classifiers.
- Numerous other options are available to find a variety of different kinds of information.
- One option is to click on 1) match all criteria, 2) state and 3) enter “CPSS” under "Search by Professional" and the list generated will include only those certified in the state requested.
